Brand Identity Refresh

Responding to investors’ push to develop products for the cloud, the creative team saw an opportunity to propose a rebrand of Akamai. A range of branding strategies were pursued, but given the short timeline and limited budget, it was necessary to propose a less radical brand refresh. Using the existing logo as a starting point, the new design adds depth and dimension to the wave symbol, investing it with new energy. Substituting the dated logotype with a modern typeface, the refreshed mark beautifully reflects the growth and transformation Akamai was undergoing at the time. Given the costs of cloud acquisitions and uncertainties among executives about rebranding the company, the decision was made to indefinitely postpone any changes to the brand.

With the acquisition of Linode in 2022, Akamai had three primary pillars driving their growth online: cloud, security, and delivery. The new logo design needed to incorporate three distinct forms to represent these business units.
